While there are numerous vendor tool based metadata management and analysis environments, many organizations consider "building it" vs. "buying it." If one is serious about building a homegrown Metadata Repository, there are a number of considerations and potential pitfalls to take into account, including:
  • Unlocking your own metadata inside the enterprise software (DI, BI, DM tools) may be more difficult that you expect and maintaining this connection with future versions, especially when this is the one thing the source is not designed to support, and not let limitations here drive down program objectives
  • Validating that the metadata which is captured is valid and “makes sense” within the larger context of other information captured and is not simply an “island unto itself” which is only searched for keywords and text
  • Accomplishing a result which can provide real and accurate answers to the original questions, whether they be developing an enterprise architecture for future systems development, supporting standardization, answering lineage and impact analysis questions, etc.
  • Ensuring that the effort lives on is continues to be valid and useful - without another massive effort to again collect metadata – rather than simply a snapshot and a pretty picture on the conference room walls of what might have been.
This presentation is designed give attendees the knowledge and ammunition necessary to avoid many of these pitfalls and make a sound “build vs. buy” decision.

John Friedrich has been working in the Information Systems arena for over 20 years. Much of his work has been on the cutting edge of modern software development, metadata management, enterprise architecture development, and data and process standardization. He has numerous successful implementations at Fortune 500 and large Government organizations. John has presented these concepts at several DAMA and meta-data conferences.

Christian has 20 years of experience entirely devoted to metadata repository technologies. He has been involved with virtually all metadata standards, more recently with the OMG CWM. He has also published numerous papers, and is a regular speaker at DAMA and metadata related conferences. He is the founder and CEO of Meta Integration in Silicon Valley (California) that he created in 1997.
